2012 Baseball Bat Specifications
by posted 11/23/2011

For the 2012 season, in their 60' diamond baseball programs, Little League International (LLI) will continue with the same baseball bat specifications as last year.

Last season, leading organizations such as LLI, NCAA, and NFHS, placed moratoriums on composite-barreled baseball bats because some composite-barrel bats, which were within spec when shipped, exceeded the agreed upon limits after being used.

LLI initiated a testing program and developed an approved list of such bats.  The list is currently the same as it was on
July 29, 2011.  As manufacturers introduce new bats, they are tested by an independent lab and, if appropriate, they are added to LLI's Approved List for Composite-barrel bats which can be found at:   http://www.littleleague.org/learn/equipment/approvedcompbatssmall.htm

Wood, metal, and alloy bats do not have the potential to exceed specs with use, and therefore are not subject to the moratorium.  They simply need to comply with longstanding specifications such as the maximum length (33 inches) and a maximum barrel diameter of  2 1/4 inches.   There is no limit on the numerical differential between length and weight, (aka: the "drop").

While the specifications have not changed from last season, the penalty for using an illegal bat will change.  Beginning in 2012 the penalty will be a "out" plus various sanctions against the manager and/or coaches.  The defense can waive the "out" and accept the play if it is to their advantage, but the sanctions would still apply.

Any questions feel free to call or write.
