Summer Baseball Update

Summer Baseball

The last three months have been difficult and challenging on many fronts.  Something as simple as local youth baseball is an ideal diversion from the complexities in the world.  From the onset of the pandemic we discussed that the health and well being of our players, families and community is of utmost importance.  As the commonwealth begins to relax measures in Phase 2, certain youth sports activities are open and more are being contemplated in phase 3.

We have evaluated the general guidelines established by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs as well as Little League International Return to Play guidelines, been in constant communication with local towns as well as Sudbury Park and Recreation to develop a set of standards and protocols that LS Youth Baseball will to implement as we move to Phase 3.  This thorough evaluation and diligence gives us the confidence that we can play baseball in a safe and fun, albeit different environment this summer.

Over the next week, in conjunction with registration, we will post our formal protocols (which may change as the environment changes) on our website.  While the LS Youth Baseball board has spent countless hours to make this a fun and responsible experience, we view this as a shared responsibility for in our community to keep us safe.  These protocols will require your support and compliance with these guideline as well as education of your player and family.

We believe that there is a path forward to bring players back to the diamond at Featherland this Summer and the board has determined that an In-Town Summer Program for rising 4th – 8th graders is the best way to do that.  We expect baseball activities to commence the week of July 6th, games to begin the week of July 13th, with registration opening early the week of June 22nd.

The timing of any season will depend on Phase 3 opening requirements set forth by the Commonwealth.

The Season

The season will offer 2/3 games per week.  We will plan on all events to be at the Featherland complex.

In an effort to make this summer family friendly we are currently planning to not play games on the weekend so families can enjoy the summer even more after months of quarantine.   We may have optional group practices for those that are around.

The current plan is to mix grades on teams (i.e. rising 4th/5th graders on a team, etc.).    This will be dependent on the registrations that we receive.

The registration window will be short, and we will likely begin to put teams together late June and communicate in early July.

Other Baseball Programs

We are hopeful to get many of you back that signed up in the spring.  This is the biggest reason that we moved forward with an ‘in-town’ program as identified as the best opportunity to reunite everyone back on the field.  With this decision we made some very difficult choices in not moving forward with BayState this summer, our summer all-star program as well as Jimmy Fund program.  We believe that, to the extent that we are able to limit the amount of travel to and from Sudbury, it would be in everyone’s best interest this summer.  As the summer continues there may be additional baseball opportunities for certain grades.

Other Grades

As a board we discussed younger grades and with the protocols in place, the nature of our young people social distancing and hygiene relative to the requirements were going to be difficult to meet.  Therefore, we determined for this age group to focus on skills and drill in the Fall of 2020.

So look out for the registration link next week, dust off the bat and glove and get ready from the first ever LS Youth Baseball Summer League.
