2020 Teenage Umpire Registration and Umpire Course.
Please read this section, then, if you have any questions on the teen umpire program, please feel free to call or write to:
Requirement to Register NOTE: Registration ends at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday March 14, 2020.
All teenage umpires (new and returning) for our AAA and AA division, need to register annually. The registration form, along with the required Liability Waiver and a required reading document about Safety, can be found in the "Documents" section of this website.
Upon receipt of the registration, additional information will be sent to registrants, as it becomes available, about the location and time for the 90-minute Indoor Training session, and for the Outdoor sessions.
INDOOR SESSION for prospective teenage umpires who have not umpired in Sudbury.
There will be indoor sessions the morning of Sunday, March 15, 2020 and on Saturday, March 21, 2020.
Prospective umpires should plan to attend one of the two indoor sessions. To do so, register with Brian Wilson.
Each ninety-minute session will address: The logistics of how games are assigned, proper attire, gameday pay, and pertinent local and national rules for the AAA and AA Divisions. Any unsubmitted paperwork will be collected.
The approach for the sunsequent outdoor onfield training session will be explained.
OUTDOOR SESSION for prospective teenage umpires who have not umpired in Sudbury.
The outdoor onfield sessions are conducted during an early season scrimmage or game, played at a TBD date.
During the outdoor session, education about safety is the primary goal. Going behind the plate is required. "Umpire Mechanics" (i.e., where to stand, how to get to the next spot, signals, etc.) are also taught.
Experience is gained in calling Balls & Strikes, Safe & Out, and Rule Violations (e.g., Obstruction, Interference).
Regulations and Playing Rules for the AA and AAA Divisions.
Our local rules document can be found in the "Documents" section of this website. Please read them when you have a chance prior to the indoor course or, for returning umps, prior to season start date. The LLB rule book is quite lengthy and detailed, so we provide this shorter version which is still quite long. It would be unrealistic of us to expect you to master all the rules. All umps learn as they umpire, but reading the document will give you a starting point.
Elimination of Refresher Meeting for Experienced AA and AAA Teen Umpires.
In the past, returning umpires were required to attend one of four identical meetings in March. However, since 2015, more frequent in-season onfield observations and guidance were added. Consequently the umps have come a long way and the value of the indoor refresher diminished. Therefore, sessions for game-experienced umps were eliminated.
